![situated in the anterior part of the orbit^ it is easily disco- verable ; but when deeply seated^ it is only indicated by the symptoms of tumours in the orbit. The first indication of treatment is to remove the dis- eases which have caused it^ as syphilis^ scrofula, &c._, if the tumour remains after the cure of the constitutional disease^ and is situated in the anterior part of the orbit, it may be removed by the use of the chisel and mallet; but when it is situated in the bottom of the cavity, it cannot be excised, without the previous extirpation of the globe of the eye—an operation which would only be feasible, when the sight of the other eye is threatened with de- struction.] WOUNDS OF THE EYE AND ITS APPENDAGES. INJURIES OP THE EYELIDS. The parts around the eye are liable to contusions, frac- tures, and wounds of every description; but since they require the same treatment as similar accidents occurring elsewhere, modified only by their influence upon the brain, it is unnecessary to treat of them in detail. [Wounds of the orbit usually involve the cellular tissue of the eyelids, the conjunctiva, and sometimes the peri- osteum. Division of the muscles of the eye and its nerves, and even of the brain, is sometimes observed after sabre and bayonet wounds, which have traversed the orbit, and penetrated into the cranial cavity.] All extraneous substances must of course be removed, and such measures adopted as will most effectually tend to prevent the accession of inflammation.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b21933285_0028.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
