    PREFACE. THIS book contains the substance of my lectures upon Diseases of the Heart, delivered at the College of Physicians and Surgeons for many years past, together with reports of cases collected from the literature of the subject, and from personal observation. The basis of the work being a course of didactic lectures, the style is colloquial, and though it may not possess that rhetorical rounding which is the offspring of elaborate revision, it is given to the profession as an exposition of the views which I have inculcated during the many years in which I have been a teacher.
