Werneth Ward again heads the list with the largest number of cases, probably the result of medical attend ance being obtained for the milder cases. Both Hartford and St Paul’s Wards have also above the average number of cases, while St. Mary’s, St. Peters’ and Mumps Wards have considerably below the average. Sixty-one of the above cases or 40 per cent, were received in hospital for treatment. In addition to this number 26 cases were received from the outside districts for treatment, several of those admit¬ ted were almost hopeless cases at the time of admission. Arrangements are in force with the Public Health Laboratory of Manchester University for the examination of Swabs. Cases are not discharged from hospital until three negative Swabs have been obtained. OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM. Sixty-eight ca-ses of this disease were notified during the year. One of the Medical Staff usually visits these cases, and they are subsequently visited by one of the Health Visitors until cured. In several cases the Health Visitors assisted the mother in carrying out the orders of the doctor attending.
