![[1° ] After thefe neceflary Adis of GOVERNMENT’ were performed, the REGENT received the Compliments and AddrefTes of the INDEPENDANTS. Firfl, I faw a Perfon advance in the Drefs of a Friar, with Beads at his Girdle, and a huge CROSS eredl, and a long Train of pampered Creatures following in a Garb I was unacquainted with : I was informed, this was the TITETLAR POPISH PRIMATE, with all the Popifh BISHOPS and CLERGY- about DUBLIN.-Prefently the PRIMATE advanced, and threw HOLY WATER upon the whole AfTembly, and fcattered PARCHMENTS freely amongil them, which I was told were INDULGENCES, and addrefling Kimfelf to the REGEN F, Laid- 44 That he blefTed “ GOD, he had lived to fee that happy Change, which 44 had often been attempted by Perfons of his Holy Re- 44 ligion, but was referved for the GREAT Man, who 44 had atcliieved it.-That however, they were not want- 44 ing in aiding him with their Prayers, which were hourly 44 put up in all their Chappels for his Succefs ; and with 44 their perpetual Praifes of his Merit, which they found 44 had its defired EfFedl, in perfuading People, that the 44 Numbers were with him, and influencing many, who 44 would have been otherwife againfl him, to go with the 44 Crowd.’* i The REGENT received his Compliments mofl gracioufly, and allured him, 44 That he had never been really of any 44 particul ir Church ; and as he was determined there 44 fliould be none national, but that every Body fhould be 44 left to (hift for himfelf, that Perfuafion would mofl cer- 44 tainly be highefl in his Efteem, which favoured mofl the 44 Form of Government, he defigned to eflablifh : And 44 as the Religion of ROME, and the INDEPENDANCY 44 of the State ever agreed bed together, he doubted not, 41 but thev fhould continue to fubfifl together in perfedt 44 HARMONY.” ’ Several Corporations of the lower Kind, were admitted to his. Prefence ; but he feemed to be greatly mortified to fee, that fome of them had but a Mdjler without a IKardcn \ and others one JVarden only, without a Majler ; and that all of them were very thin in their Ranks.
