    ‘Preface. EVER since the period, when the attention of medical practitioners became more partic- ularly attracted to the consideration of the disorders of the hepatic system, an errone- ous practice has prevailed, and almost grown into a fashion with many, of refering indefi- nitely the origin of every disorder, where the stomach is concerned, to a derangement: in the functions of the liver ; and of consider- ing those symptoms, which are proper to this Jatter complaint, as indicative of an inflamma- tory affection, or of an organic disease, of that organ. In the following pages, I have attempted to point out the nature of these and similar errors in its diagnosis, and the practical consequences resulting from them ; and at the same time have endeavoured, by an enumeration of its symptoms, and by a view of its pothology and its mode of treat: 1*
