If tlie in- halation is only intended for the nose, the steam is drawn up and down the nostrils. If for the larynx, deep inspirations should be made through the nose and mouth. About four to eight minutes are occupied over each inhalation, which is repeated hourly, or less often, as the case demands. It is not advisable to go out of doors for half an hour afterwards. Special inhalers may also be employed. The essential oils must be prescribed with light carbonate of magnesia to hold them in suspension ; but nowadays these oils are more conveniently given in oily sprays [see Formulae 66 to 70), or used as dry inhalations. Formula 13 1^ Tincturse benzoini com- pdsitse . . • §i • • • S^'O c.c. The well-known Friar's balsam is a useful sedative. It can be rendered more soothing by the addition of I drachm of chloroform.
