![Secretary at War, respecting plans for the improvement of the Muster Rolls, and for facilitating the Answers to the daily enquiries which are made at my Office by the relatives of Soldiers, as well as by discharged Soldiers, to ascertain their services upon their examination before the Commissioners of Chelsea Hospital, for which purpose I was authorized some time since to open Alphabetical Regi¬ mental Registers, formed from the Muster Rolls, and to appoint additional Clerks to the Establishment for the execution of that business. Q. 65. Do you continue to receive the same Salary and Fees as you received when the return of the Establishment of your Office was made to the Finance Committee of the House of Commons, in June 3798 ?-A. The Salary has undergone no variation since, but the annual average of the Fees has been considerably less than is there stated, perhaps from six to seven hundred pounds a year; the average profits of the Odice may be taken at about £. 2,000 a year. Q. 66. Has there been any alteration made in the duties of the Office, since Mr. Wind¬ ham’s Letter to you, dated the 29th March 1798, which is published in the Appendix to the 36th Report of t.iie Select Committee on Finance ?-A. Not any. Q. 67. What is the present Establishment of the Office of the Commissary General of Musters?-A. A Deputy Commissary General, established by Elis Majesty’s Com¬ mission; a Chief Clerk, who acts as Assistant Commissary; and five other Clerks. Q. 6S. What is the amount of the Salaries and the Emoluments of the persons you have named; and of the Contingent Expenses of the Office of Musters ?-A. I will send an Account of them to the Board. Q. 69. To whom is an Account rendered of these Expenses ?-A. I believe no Account is rendered, as the several Charges are limited. Q. 70. How is Money procured to pay the Salaries and Expenses of your Office?- A. By His Majesty’s Warrant, and Estimate having been previously voted by Parliament. Q. 71. Mr. Aust. v___J [Referred to in the Answer to Question 13.] Extract MINUTE of Board held at Cheisea Hospital on Monday the 1st of April 1S05. THE Secretary represented to the Board, that it would be highly convenient to him to reside at Kensington, from whence he perforins the daily Duties of his Office, in the same manner as if he was resident in the College; and requesting he might receive the Allowance in lieu of Diet, as if he resided at Chelsea. Approved, and Ordered that the said Allowance be granted to him for such days only as he shall actually reside at Kensington, to be certified conformably to the existing Re¬ gulations. Appendix, No. 3. (B.) WARRANT for a New Establishment of Chelsea Hospital. GEORGE R.
