![[ ] after the experience of fo many centuries, that fo little has been accompliflied towards arrelHng its career or preventing its propagation. This, indeed, has been attempted in the plague and yellow fever, by eftablilhing quarantines and lazarettoesi alfo by various prophylaflic remedies, as wine, bark, camphor, vinegar, aromatic fumigations. See. but without materially checking the contagion in its courfe, till it hath exhaufted itfelf, or Ipontaneoufly ceafed on a cold fcafon fetting in. A. remnant of the iubtile poilon, however, attaches itfelf to yeftments, furnitbre, and other furrounding objeds^, and lies dormant till a warm • atmofphere and other occafional caufes renew its adivity and recal it into adion. Remarks. When the prefervatlon of life (hall once become an important objed of national concern, and a ^OARD OF Health lhall be inftituted in this as in other enlightened nations, then, and not till then, can this or any efficient prefervative plan, in fuch cafes, be duly carried into execution. Under fuch an inftitution, direded by the Faculty, and ftridly enforced by an aft of the legiflature, there is reafon - to believe that this fatal clafs of difeafes might, at . no very dillant period, be greatly reduced.
