![decree against Mr. Deane, nor promise made by Mr. Deane can bind his successor, beside the collusion that may be in the meane tyme betweene Mr. Deane and his curatt, where some alleadge that it is more beneficiall to the parish to have a curate then a vicar by reason that the vicar may be no’ resident, beside the tie of Iawe there is a bond of oath that bindeth the vicar to p’sonall residence; the curate is free from both. In my poore diocese I wish and purpose the remove but of one vicar, but I cold willingely spare most of the curates. I doe presume in this cause the rather to write unto y’r honor, not onely because I take the suppression ot this vicarige to be prejudic’all, but alsoe because this case may prove a leadinge case to the destruction ot manie vicareges, and so become p’nicious unto the church. In this litle diocese wherein are but about 120 churches there are, beside Henllan, 28 vicariages belonginge to impropriations, of the endowe- ment of anie one whereof (God is my record) though I have somewhat p’used [perused] the recordes I doe not thinke there can be any sufficient proofe. If againe the consent of byshop deane and chapiter may lawfullie consolidate them unto im- propriate rectories, I have little hope but that w’thin short time manie resident and painefull vicars shalbe turned to gaddinge and beggerlie curates. The b[ishop] and archdeacon may gaine 250/z p’ ann’ if he love lucru[m] in area and feare not damnu[m] in con’cia. The deane and chapiter may have a divident of 100It. p’ annu’, one p’bendarie may have 90li p’ annu’ and another 30li. Some honorable and other p’prietars of note may by such a shuffle increase theire revenues by 1,000/z p’ annu’. If the church may receive so great damage in this poore corner what mischeefe may be done through the whole kingedome, who can but take notice of what passeth before y’r honours. Out of my love to the p’ties, my desire of peace, and feare of this daunger I did about the end of Michelmas terme obtaine of the counsell of the pi’ and p’swade what I cold w’th the deft and some of his counsell to refer the cause to anie one 2 or 3 bishops of the kingdome. Understandinge by the pi’ his counsell y’r ho. desire of peace I did eftsoones (findinge the pi. conformable) send my Chauncellor and register to p’swade the deft to refer the cause to some indifferent frinds in the countrie, but Mr. Deane upon reasons best knowne unto him self wold not hearken therto. Cravinge p’done for my bowldnes and referringe the cause to y’r ho. wisdome and justice I com’end yo’r honor in my praires to the protecc’on of the Almightie, and rest at your ho. comaund, Richard Asaphen.’ St. Asaph, iij° Aprilis, 1611.
