A letter from Sir John Williams, archbishop of York, to Sir John Owen, kt., governor of Conway ; Rhuddlan, 23 Dec. 1645. Immediately preceding the archbishop’s letter is a copy of the communication from Mr. Gilbert Byron to which he alludes. His own letter, which is signed by himself, runs as follows:— Mr. Governo’r. Whereas my nephewe Griffith Will’ms bringes me by waye of answer concerning Capt. Barrows, recom- mended by the preceding l’re, the originall whereof I shewed unto you yesterdaye, that you doe not knowe the man nor his sould’rs, being of the garrison of Beeston Castle, Be pleased to understand yt I for my p’t knowe him and his men less then you, haveing never heard ot his name before this tyme. But because I doe knowe yt this towne wants exp’ienced men in yt kinde, and doe much suspect it wants such a comander. Secondly, because from all hands I doe heare it confirmed yt the enemye have a sudden and particular designe upon this place. Thirdly, because if thinges should not prove well 1 doe not knowe where I may be cal’d in question for this l’re w’ch I could have wisht Mr. Gilbert Byron had written to any man rather then to me, I doe beseich you to send me a positive answer yt I may returne unto this gentleman, and if you please to oblige me soe much to give it in writeing, and I shall remayne, your verye loveing cozen ready to serve you, Jo.
