![Mr. Leeke was customer in the foresaid portes w’ch was untill A’o xiiij0 of her ma’tie’s raigne to allowe the inhabitants foresaid to be free of the newe imposte for such wines as were uttered and spent there and not transported from thence by water to any other porte where imposte was usually paid. And Mr. Gardener and Mr- Robinson duringe their severall leases never receyved one peny for imposte for any wynes spent brought and uttered w’thin the foresaid portes of Cardiffe, Chepstowe, Newport, and Cowbridge who had as ample a g[r]aunte therof as the nowe ffarmo’rs have it. And sythens A’o xiiij° of her Ma’tie’s raigne yf any inhabitants in the foresaid portes brought any wynes there, yf the[y] brought xxtie, xltie or lx. tonnes they paid but for ten, twentie, or thirtie in respect of such wynes as they ment to t[ra]nsport to Englande. And [in Aprill 1564]1 there was a warrant directed to the auditor ot South Wales from the foresaid right honorable the late lord threasorer and from the right honorable Mr. Chauncller of the Excheaquer In considerac’on of the payment of ton’adge and pondage in Wales not used there before, and tor other causes in the said warrant conteyned That the inhabitants in the porte of Millforde and the creekes there adjoynynge should be discharged of the newe imposte for wynes untill further order therin were taken w’ch conciderac’ons remaine as yet in force, as bythecopye of the said warrant readie to be showed to yo’r honor. And w’ch remayneth of recorde vv’th M’r. Auditor of SouthWales appeared:. It seemed reasonable unto yo’r honor uppon the like good conciderac’ons lately to order that the inhabitants in the porte of Bewmaris in the county of Anglesey and other portes in North Wales should be discharged of this newe imposte for such wynes as there should be spent and brought, and not transported from thence by water. So we humbly pray it may pleas yo’r honor to order that w’thin the foresaid portes in SouthWales we be discharged of the foresaid newe imposte for such wynes as are and shalbe spent w’thin the p’cyncts of the foresaid portes, and not transported from thence elleswhere by water. 1331 (a) fif. 14/Z-15.
