    % average yearly increase in the number of patients during the past five years would have been :— Males. Females. Total. I5'S ■ • ■ • 19-6 • • ■ ■ 35'4 There is no reason to anticipate that in the immediate future there will be any diminution in the increase. In a year’s time, therefore, unless steps are at once taken to increase the accommodation of the Female division, the position will probably be one of considerable difficulty and anxiety. 3. I venture to submit that the best course for your Committee to adopt is at once to undertake the enlarge¬ ment of the Annexe so that it will accommodate 140 more female patients ; this addition would then bring the Asylum up to the maximum limit of accommodation, (viz. :—for 1,200 patients) already decided upon b}r your Committee. The advantages that would be obtained by at once undertaking an extension are as follows:— I. There would be no necessity to adopt the expensive and highly unsatisfactory procedure of boarding out any of your patients, and the possibility of serious difficulty arising from your Committee being unable to obtain accommodation elsewhere, owing to the lack of surplus room there is generally in all the County Asylums in the country, would be avoided. II. There is ever)* probability of your Committee being able to fill up your surplus accommoda¬ tion by patients from other Counties, the profit upon which would tend greatly to reduce the cost of the enlargement. 4. When the plans for the Annexe were drawn in 1882 it was suggested that the Female division could at some future time be extended for 140 more patients than it was then decided to build for, by the erection of two Day Rooms and two Dormitories, &c., as shown on plan produced.
