About this work
Description
Luxmimalar Velauthar, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Consultant at Newham University Hospital, filmed in artist's studio in October 2020.
Dr. Luxmimalar Velauthar was appointed Obstetric Lead in March 2020, just as the pandemic escalated, and contracted COVID-19 shortly after, requiring isolation while managing work and family responsibilities. She recalls the fear and urgency before COVID-19 hit the UK, not enough preparation time and resource shortages. Despite these challenges, the hospital responded quickly, and staff felt supported even when resources were limited.
Dr. Velauther describes Newham’s Maternity Department as a family-like team that supported innovation and collaboration. She introduced digital tools such as WhatsApp groups to improve communication and information sharing. She also led the implementation of universal COVID screening for all admitted pregnant women, making Newham the first UK hospital to adopt this policy. Findings from the screening initiative were later published in the European Obstetrics Journal and influenced national guidance. Dr. Valauther emphasises the team effort, and not only her own achievement.
Dr. Velauther talks about staff morale decline over time due to bereavements and stress. She acknowledges feelings of vulnerability and describes coping strategies, likening the experience of the pandemic to post-traumatic stress. She talks about challenges faced by a predominantly BAME, female colleagues in being heard and respected within the NHS hierarchy.
Dr. Velauther remains hopeful and she believes in resilience and teamwork as key to overcoming the crises.
