About this work
Description
Paintings, sculptures and painted found objects created by Gwyneth Rowlands while at Netherne Hospital in Surrey; the majority were created between c.1960s-1970s. Also contains some artworks created following her departure from Netherne Hospital in the early 1980s.
The majority of the surviving works created by Gwyneth Rowlands are painted stones and flints which she collected in the hospital grounds following tilling of the land. The series of butterflies painted on pebbles (PP/ADA/C/8/134/1- PP/ADA/C/8/134/37) were copied from a book in the hospital library and the pebbles themselves collected from a trip to the seaside.
