About this work

Also known as

Previous title, replaced April 2021: Gravel in urine.

Description

Illustration from Hooke, Robert: Micrographia: or some physiological descriptions of minute bodies made by magnifying glasses, London : Printed by J. Martyn and J. Allestry, 1665. The work is the result of detailed observations by Robert Hooke using the recently invented microscope. The publication was funded by The Royal Society and the popularity of the book helped further the society's image and mission of being 'the' scientifically progressive organization of London. The book was dedicated to Charles II, patron of the Royal Society. Micrographia also focused attention on the miniature world, capturing the public's imagination in a radically new way. Hooke most famously describes a fly's eye and a plant cell (where he coined that term because plant cells, which are walled, reminded him of monks' chambers).
