About this work

Also known as

Previous title, replaced January 2025: A white man and a white woman about to be immolated and burnt by black people with white daggers and spears inside a palisade. Watercolour by N. Goullet, 1955.

Description

Painting depicts several people holding white daggers to the two people's necks. Multiple fires have been set in front of them and are surrounded by a larger group of people carrying spears, another striking a drum. A brown wagon is painted in the left foreground. The two people are in possible Victorian or Edwardian dress so may be a depiction of a missionaries execution in Africa. Date of creation is inscribed by the creator on the front.
