Notes
This work is untitled: the title has been supplied by the cataloguer.
The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "Right up to the second half of the twentieth century, it was rare for working-class people in larger British cities to have facilities for bathing and washing clothes at home. The local baths and wash-house provided these essential services. In addition, some baths offered an opportunity to swim and socialise. Certain bath-houses such as the one pictured here at Bermondsey, in South London, acquired a reputation as being gay meeting places, particularly if the facilities offered included steam baths, as did the new Bermondsey baths, opened in 1927".
