Description

Photograph of five 19th century stethoscopes. From left to right, the first is a funnel-shaped stethoscope lined with brass, the third is possibly French and the fifth was possibly desined by Stokes. They were acquired by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum and accessioned in 1936, 1940, 1941 and 1955 and given accession numbers (left to right): R1264/1940, R2311/1936, R88/1955, R101/1941 and R96/1955. The second and fourth microscopes are now held by the Science Museum (object numbers A625010 and A198334).
