Biographical note
Project Summary:Debating Science Issues (DSI) is a debate competition, co-hosted by eight research and education centres throughout the Republic and Northern Ireland, encouraging discussion on the societal and ethical implications of advances in biomedical science. School students (15–18 years of age), teachers and community groups partake in three-hour workshops, which provide opportunities for teaching and guided discussion surrounding biomedical science through informal round table dialogue. These workshops engage participants' imagination and their desire to learn more about the science and the ethics behind it. The school students channel this enthusiasm in the debating competition. DSI trains participants to analyse and articulate complex science issues that confront our populations today.
