The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "German soldiers, World War I period or earlier, celebrating the birthday of one of them (according to an inscription on the item catalogued). All appear to be much the worse for drink, the 'drunkenness' of the pair in the middle manifesting in a spoof 'romantic' episode, using drunkenness as a pretext for 'uncharacteristic' behaviour".
