About this work
Description
This is one of a number of title pages that derive from that of S. Blankaart's Nieuw-hervormde anatomie ofte ontleding des menschen lichaams, Amsterdam 1696 (see this catalogue 25207 and Wolf-Heidegger and Cetto, no. 184, p. 259) The anatomist's features are a generalized version of those seen in the Blankaart title page and cannot be said to represent Raymond de Vieussens, the author of the Novum vasorum corporis humani systema. The main alteration between the two plates has been in the omission of a figure in shadow on the left, the original pair to the figure on the right. As a result of this change, the title is more prominent and more legible. The anatomist retracts the skin to reveal the intestines of the cadaver and next to its head is a pair of eyeglasses which is perhaps a reference to scientific observation
