Description
Photograph of the ruins of Old Fort Ridgely, built in 1853. Fort Ridgely was an outpost of the United States Army in Minnesota which was attacked during the Dakota War (also known as the Sioux Uprising) of 1862. It was at the same time as Sir Henry Wellcome's home town of Garden City, where Wellcome's father was amongst the volunteers who organized the defence of the town. The young Sir Henry Wellcome, with other boys his age, cast lead bullets for the townspeople.
