About this work

Description

Paintings by Normal Psychology patient 8, who was Rita Simon's mother. The image on the recto shows a landscape with the silouette of trees and a house with a stripped sky in rusty-orange, yellow and blue. It is inscribed with the artists name (H.M. Sowerby) and age (85 years and 6 months). The image on the verso is in a very different style, notes by Wellcome staff in conversation with Rita Simon suggest it depicts either a devil with wings walking through a wood, or a man with a horse.

The titles have been taken from notes made during conversations between Rita Simon and Wellcome staff between 1995 and 1997

Rita Simon's style classification: the classifications for both images are written on the verso, it isn't clear which class relates to which image, but Archaic massive and Massive transition are both depicted on the work by the circle diagram.
