Description
Photograph of a brass microtome of the type introduced by C.M. Topping, a famous preparer of microscope slides, in the 1840s. It came into general use in the 1850s. The thickness of the section was controlled by the micrometer screw. The item was acquired by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum at an unknown point and accessioned in 1916 (accession number R5007). It is not held by Wellcome Collection.
