086246/Z/08/Z: Tranquility is a State of Mind

Project Summary:This project takes the metaphor of the hearing aid as a point of departure, when individuals suffer hearing loss, a range of prosthetic devices and therapies are available to alleviate the symptoms. As a society we have been gradually devaluing our ability to listen in preference to seeing. We would research contexts in which the act of listening itself might be contemplated. The listener might listen to herself listen. Using the idea of the listening aid as a central metaphor the project will investigate notions of noise, tranquillity, health and wellbeing in relation to the perception of sound in the environment.
