About this work

Description

Cliodhna Gillespie, Lead Occupational Therapist at The Coborn Centre for Adolescent Mental Health, Newham University Hospital, filmed in artist's studio in October 2020.

The Coborn Centre for Adolescent Mental Health provides person- and family-centred care for young people aged 12-18 with complex and severe mental illness. The Coborn assesses, treats, and supports adolescents during the most acute phase of their difficulties in view of reintegrating them back into their families and schools as soon as possible (taken from the NHS website).

In 2020 Cliodhna Gillespie managed the Occupational Therapy team at the Centre. In her interview, she talks about the impact of the lockdown and COVID on young people and its short and long-term effects. Due to the lockdown, some young people who were out of school and not in contact with community or external support services were subsequently admitted to the hospital. The cases of drug-induced psychosis, self-harm harm and suicide attempts increased.

Cliodhna Gillespie found the lack of social contact outside of work the most difficult part of the lockdown. Living alone and spending extended periods at home was challenging.
