Description
A set of five photographs published in an issue of Hygeia, July 1928, of the traditional Zulu healer Dr Shangase from Natal. Top left: Shangase treating a patient with emetics (accession number PHO 5760). Top right: Shangase treating a patient suffering from tuberculosis of the knee joint (accession number PHO 5762). Centre: Shangase sitting (accession number PHO 5761). Bottom left: Shangase directing his attendant as he draws out the sickness in the arm of a patient by sucking through a horn (accession number PHO 5758). Bottom right: Shangase treating a girl with chronic headaches by cutting into her skull and scraping the bone (accession number PHO 5759).
