Biographical note
Gene Ontology is a major, collaborative bioinformatics initiative to ensure consistent descriptions and terminology are used across databases. It was originally constructed in 1998 by the Gene Ontology Consortium when it was founded in the same year. Originally established by FlyBase, the Saccharomyces Genome Database, and the Mouse Genome Database, it has become a foundational resource for genomics, molecular biology, and computational biology. The European Bioinformatics Institute is one of the major participating groups.
