Biographical note
Scottish doctor, originally a naval surgeon, later established himself in practice in Jamaica and studied the local plants. Became honorary surgeon-general of the island. Discovered a native species of cinchona in Jamaica. Finally retired to Edinburgh in 1798. Herbarium collection at the Natural History Museum.
