Description

Photograph of four 19th century stethoscopes. From left to right, the first has an ivory ear plate and was possibly designed by Stokes and the second, third and fourth are English, mid 19th century, and of the type designed by Piorry. They were acquired by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum and accessioned in 1936, 1946 and 1955, accession numbers (left to right): R102/1955, R2265/1936, R520/1946, R2277/1936. They are not held by Wellcome Collection. The first three are now held by the Science Museum (object number A163606, A625050 and A625006).
