Reproduction note

According to Burgess, "after a medal struck in 1779 (Storer, 1723)". Storer gives a reference 21, 1892, p. 316, which D. Bateson, the coin expert, identified as H.A. Grueber, 'English personal medals from 1760', Numismatic chronicle, 3rd series, XII, 1892, pp. 300-323, p. 316, "This is an electro type of a proof medal. It formerly belonged to Mr Edward Hawkins who attributed the portrait to William Hunter and its issue to 1779". This certainly refers to the lead proof of the medal by Lewis Pingo which belongs to the Hunterian Museum and so the print should be associated with Burgess no. 1779.9 instead of with the present print (information from Dr Helen Brock, 18 July 1997)
