About this work

Description

A woodblock printed detailed account of the therapeutic uses of pressure on various parts of the body, particularly Chinese traditions, in hiragana-majiri with extensive furigana. The author was Ōta Shinsai with illustrations provided by Murata Yoshikoto (d. 1849). In one illustration, the technique of giving infants a therapeutic massage is shown: the mother and child are depicted with traditional Japanese clothing and hair-styles, but in other illustrations the figures wear styles more typically associated with Chinese cultures.
