The MDU was founded in 1885 and is regarded as the world's first medical defence organisation. It was established after widespread concern within the medical profession over the wrongful conviction and imprisonment of a doctor, David Bradley, highlighting the need for collective professional protection. The MDU is headquartered in Canary Wharf, London and today has approximately 200,000 members across the UK healthcare professions.
