Reproduction of the caricature "Cholera Pie" by Robert Cruickshank (1789-1856) with the caption: "A caricature by Cruikshank indicating a popular beliefof the past that physicians became wealthy as a result of epidemic pestilences. Rowlandson drew a similar cartoon showing physicians paying homage to influenza. In the Middle Ages the physicians were sometimes accused of spreading pestilential disease, since they were the only people who profited. The mortality among physicians during these epidemics was, however, extremely high" underneath the image.
