Description

Four effigies of Shopono, God of smallpox, created by the Yoruba people, Nigeria. Three show the head sumounting a pillar and in one the god is shown kneeling on top of a pillar. The items were acquired by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum and accessioned in 1946 (accession number R217/1946). They are not held by Wellcome Collection. The items were exhibited in the Museum's exhibition "Medicine of the Aboriginal Peoples in the British Commonwealth" held in 1952.
