Project Summary:Shuffle Festival will be building on our history of creating cutting-edge cultural and educational happenings across film, visual + performance art, scientific research, public workshops and discussion. This year the summer festival will be held in Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, the largest area of urban woodland in London. In 2014 we propose to look at Nature, Survival and Death and launch a new short film prize (judged by Danny Boyle) specifically relating to 'Science and the Imagination'. T his application relates only to the science element of Shuffle Festival, which can be broken into three main parts. 1. Day of The Dead (Sunday the 3rd August 2014) A full day of workshops directly related to exploring the modern taboo towards the last stage of life: death. Conducted by leading scientists across the fields of neuropsychology and neuroscience, materials science and sleep science and culminating in a 'Decay Dinner,' a sophisticated curated feast combining cooking and chemistry and revealing the potential of food in both sustenance and medicine. 2.Still Ill Site-specific theatrical production by local theatre group involving local hospitals and academics to be performed on the Day of the Dead. 3. Science Summer Camp A three day 'Science Camp' for children aged 7 12 run by play workers and with specialist sessions with scientists, naturalists and architects to build dens, discover natural ecosystems in their cities and learn about their own bodies and th e relationship to natural processes.
