About this work

Description

Funke Bella, Senior Radiographer at Newham University Hospital, filmed in artist's studio in September 2020.

Funke Bella reflects on an early experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. She recalls performing chest X-rays before lockdown without realizing patients might have COVID. She recalls her first encounter with a COVID-positive patient: during a late shift, she was called to perform a portable chest X-ray on a ward. After taking the X-ray, the image looked alarming. It was confirmed later that the patient had Covid. This happened in February or March 2020, and the uncertainty was frightening. Funke Bella was among the first staff to notice something was wrong, though she couldn’t confirm it was COVID initially. Early cases looked severe and unusual on X-rays, resembling patchy fibrosis across the lungs, different from typical pneumonia.

Funke Bella reflects on her emotions during the pandemic. She is grateful for being part of the team that cared for patients. While upset about the tragedy and loss of life, Funke Bella feels proud to have contributed by performing urgent chest X-rays, responding quickly to emergencies, and helping save lives. Looking back, she has no regrets or anger, only sadness and questions about why the pandemic happened. She finds comfort in knowing that she did everything possible to care for her patients during the pandemic.
