Description
Line engraving by W. Kilian, 1652, after C. Ortz of two surgeons treating two seated male patients in a surgery. The older of the two surgeons is cauterising the shoulder of the patient via a method known as "Capsula Casseriana", which involves using a wooden box to hide the red-hot iron from the patient's eyes. The younger of the surgeons (on the right) is applying leeches, visible in a bowl on the table, to the patient's neck and back. Related images: V0016709
