Biographical note
John Black received his medical training at Cambridge University, MB BChir (1943), MD (1951), and University College Hospital, London.During the Second World War he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. He served in India, Burma and Malaysia, 1943-1947, and attained the final rank of Major (medical specialist).Between 1954 and 1959 Black was Consultant Paediatrician at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow and County of Renfrew; Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Child Health, London, 1959-1963; Consultant Paediatrician at Sheffield Children's Hospital and Jessop Hospital for Women, 1963-1981. During the 1980s he was a Consultant Paediatrician to King's College Hospital, London.Black's professional experience abroad includes five months at Kinderspital, Zurich, Switzerland, under Professor G Fanconi, 1951, three 3-week Visiting Professorships to Tripoli, Libya, 1981, 1982 and 1983, and medical visits to Eritrea, 1983 and 1992.He published many articles on paediatric matters.John Angus Black died 21 May 2013.
