    M° 376 A.D. 1902 Date of Application, 2nd Jan., 1902 Complete Specification Left, 2nd Oct, 7902—Accepted, 11th Dec., 1902 PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION. “ An Improved Instrument for Cutting the Teats of Cows and other Animals ” I, Allan John Ross, of Kihi Kihi, Waikato, Provincial District of Auckland, in the Colony of New Zealand, Settler, do hereby declare the nature of this in¬ vention to he as follows: — This invention is intended for use with cows the openings in whose teats 5 are either too small to allow of a free flow of the milk therefrom or have become choked by reason of an abnormal growth therein known as “ structure Milk¬ ing a cow suffering from these complaints is exceedingly difficult and causes great pain to the animal, and it has hitherto been customary to open the teat by pushing a double edged probe up into the teat so as to cut its way in and 10 enlarge the passage. This operation is one requiring considerable care and skill in order to avoid unnecessarily cutting the teat, and the instrument that I have devised has been designed to provide quick and efficient means whereby the operation may be carried out with a minimum of pain and inconvenience to the animal. 16 It consists of a pair of cutting blades hinged together and provided with handle extensions so as to make the instrument of scissor form. The cutting edges are upon the outer edges of the blades and the blades are made broad at their ends and taper inwards to the pivot. The ends are also rounded so that when the blades are shut together their edges shall be uniform. 20 When using the instrument the closed blades are inserted into the opening in tht teat, opened to the required distance and withdrawn sharply so that the cutting edges of the blades shall cut the teat open. The distance to which the blades can be opened may be regulated by a thumb¬ screw upon the handles of the instrument. 2/j Dated this 2nd day of January 1902.
