The 1911 play by H.G. Pelissier (1874-1913) was based on the 1901 novel Count Hannibal: a romance of the court of France by Stanley J. Weyman. Pelissier's troupe, 'The Follies', presented a long run of satirical musical plays, in which he acted as producer, composer and performer, often featured cross-dressed characters.
