Photograph of the first and last pages of a letter dated 12 July 1869 from James Young Simpson to Thomas Nunnely pouring scorn on the use of carbolic acid at Glasgow and Edinburgh and referring to the collection of records of amputations and the mortality in such cases. It is one of a number of photographs accumulated by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum as part of its exhibition held in 1927 to celebrate the centenary of Lister, in conjunction with The Royal Society, The British Universities Hospitals and Medical and Surgical Colleges.
