Description

Photograph of a drawing by Pieter Brueghel the elder showing a group on people on a pilgrimage to Meulebeke dancing erratically. Outbreaks of mass psychosis taking the form of dance frenzies were known as St. Vitus's Dance, dancing mania and dancing plauge. The photograph was purchased by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum at the VIth International Congress of Medicine, 1927 and accessioned in 1937 (accession number PHO 10180).
