About this work

Description

Diplomas of honorary membership. The diplomas were issued to recipients likely to make a financial contribution to the Society. They are printed, with the name of the recipient and the date added in manuscript. The design by [James] George Oben portrays an arch bearing the date 1817, surmounted by the royal arms and decorated with the arms of honorary members. Through the arch a prospect of London is visible. In front of the arch is a statue of Jenner treading down a serpent representing smallpox. On the plinth are shown children receiving the benefit of vaccination originating from a cow. Some items bear paper seals showing Jenner between four cows, with St Paul's and a naval scene in the background.
