    ADVERTISEMENT. IT is one of the great signs of the improvement of the age in which we live, that original sources are the main channels through which knowledge is sought. Selections and translations seem hut of little value in the eye of the Biblical Student, when placed in comparison with the works from which they are taken. Hence the gradual rise in the price of the Fathers of the Church, the early Critics and Commen- tators, the Works of the Reformers, and Historical Collections hearing upon Church History. The Proprietor, through a long life extending to upwards of three quarters of a century, attended hy the blessing ^ mens sana in corpore sano/ has seen many vicissitudes in the literary taste of the public, and, always anxious to merit its approbation and support, he has continued to amass a Collection of the Works of Authors whose names shed lustre upon all countries and all times.” An Octogenarian may there- fore be pardoned the pleasure he takes in tracing the gradual rise of a stock, which in extent can be equalled by few, and of which his published Catalogues, of ‘ English, French, Italian and Spanish Literature, and Natural History,’ alone exhibit 18,315 articles; whilst the volumes devoted to Classical and Philological Works increase the list by 14,582 numbers.
