Biographical note
Andrew Balfour was born in Edinburgh on 21 March 1873. He studied in Edinburg, Cambridge and Strasbourg and completed his MD in Edinburgh in 1898. He spent 12 years in Khartoum, Sudan (1902-14) and was the Medical Officer of Health in the city as well as the director of the Wellcome Tropical Research Laboratory. In 1923 he was appointed Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and oversaw the construction of a new school.
He was knighted in 1930 but due to stress he succumbed to clinical depression and was found frozen to death outside of the hospital in Kent.
