About this work

Description

Burroughs Wellcome & Co. desk/hanging calendar illlustrated with tales of folklore. Includes advertisements for Wellcome products.

The folklore tales are taken from the following publications: G. O'Suilleabhain, A Handbook of Irish Folklore; Victor Robinson, M.D., The Story of Medicine; E. & M. A. Radford, Encyclopaedia of Supersitions; John Wesley, Primitive Physic; Edith Grey Wheelwright, The Physick Garden and J. Ceredig Davies, The Welsh Gazette.

The calendar includes folklore on, for instance, disease transference, which was the object of many rememdies. For example, it was believed that if a patient's old bathing water was thrown over a stray cat, the disease would transfer from patient to animal and the cat could then be thrown out of the house, taking the disease with it.
