About this work

Description

He is wearing a black hat with lipstick and beaded necklaces; with a soft-focus plain background. Billy Lorraine in convincing 'passing' drag. By 1930 much heavier make-up was being worn by women of fashion, highly influenced by Hollywood films, which, since the advent of 'Talkies' in 1927-1928, were more popular than ever. The hair and make-up seen here is similar to that worn by Greta Garbo, at this time at the height of her fame.
