About this work
Description
Richa Gupta, Registrar - Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Newham University Hospital, filmed in artist's studio in September 2020.
Richa Gupta describes her role caring for pregnant women, performing caesarean sections and instrumental deliveries, and treating gynaecological issues such as miscarriages. She explains how the pandemic disrupted normal services, gynaecology became limited, staffing shortages arose, and fear among healthcare workers was common.
Dr. Gupta shares early encounters with COVID positive pregnant patients, including a severe case requiring a preterm caesarean to protect the mother's health. She highlights challenges such as PPE shortages, increased workload, changes to visiting rules, and the emotional toll on women giving birth without full support from partners. Dr. Gupta talks about efficiency of antenatal managers who made communication changes including calling patients before appointments and creating testing protocols.
For Dr. Gupta the most challenging was the treatment of women experiencing miscarriages due to lack of beds and non specialist staff. The women were put in mixed bays with men and non specialist nurses would be dealing with the paitients.
Dr. Gupta recalls how she personally coped with the crises spending time with family, cycling, cooking, and staying connected with friends and family virtually. She shares concerns about halted or delayed planned surgeries, including IVF and other gynaecological procedures, emphasising the need to find solutions for the growing backlog.
