Description

Comprises notes on various topics by Robert Whytt, some for publications or lectures, dated mid 18th century:

  • MS.6878/1: Commentaries or notes on various authors, largely fragmentary: including notes on Jean Baptiste Senac's Traité de la structure du coeur... (Paris, 1749), John Martin Butt's Tenamen medicum inaugurale de spontanea sanguinis sepertione (Edinburgh, 1760) and others.
  • MS.6878/2: Draft essay on the laws of motion considering the work of Rudjer J. Boskovic (1711-1787).
  • MS.6878/3: Notes on the aliments or digestion, including two fair copy fragments prepared for insertion in a larger work.
  • MS.6878/4: On diabetes and its cure.
  • MS.6878/5: On fevers, largely from other authors notably William Cullen (1710-1790).
  • MS.6878/6: On nervous disease, including the influence of the mind on the body.
  • MS.6878/7: On delirium or madness.
  • MS.6878/8: On menstrual disorders and diseases of the uterus. Section from a notebook, originally pp. 59-65.
  • MS.6878/9: Three drafts by Whytt: 1. An address to students regarding an illness of Whytt's, setting out how in light of this he intends to rearrange his lectures on the brain and the nerves; 2. Passage regarding defects of sight caused by obstructions in the retina, stating that unlike cataracts these cannot be addressed by surgery and setting out various other possible cures. On the back of this sheet is a draft advertisement for a house to let; 3. Draft on medical research and the value or not of speculation, addressed to medical students.

  • MS.6878/11: Commentarius medicus de aphthis nostratibus seu belgarum sprouw, by Vincento Ketelaer, edited by John Smith (London, 1759): "Dutch Sore Throat". Ms. note on half-title page "Dutch Sore Throat".
